PACK 41

 Return to the BUILD

“Included with this issue are more parts for the passenger door to your replica Aston Martin DB5.”

This is, by far, the most interesting pack of Issue 11 as it has the most to build.

Contents

Parts

This image includes the parts for the entire issue. However, the parts included with this pack are:

  • Left Door and Handle

Materials: The Left Door is metal with a pre-installed plastic Handle.

Screws

This pack came with three bags of unlabeled screws containing the following type(s):

  • Four (4) Type C – We’ve seen these before
  • Four (4) Type I – We’ve seen these before too (back with Pack 36)
  • Three (3) Type M – These are a NEW type of screw

Build

Left Door Hinge and Retainer

Retrieve all of the parts from the last pack. Place the rod section of the Left Door Hinge into this matching slot of the Left Door and Handle.

When installed, the ‘L’ stamped on the Left Door Hinge should be closer to the bottom of the door, as shown:

Fit the Left Door Hinge Retainer in place so it holds the rod section of the Left Door Hinge in place, and secure the Left Door Hinge Retainer into place with one (1) Type M screw.

This is your friendly reminder to try using 3-in-One Oil on all screws going into metal:

Left Door Lock

Fit the Left Door Lock to the rear of the Left Door and Handle as shown.

This kind of snaps into place. It should be flush with the edge of the door:

Secure it down with one (1) Type I screw:

Window and Window Frame

Retrieve the Window and Window Frame from Pack 39. Fit the three posts of Window into the matching sockets of the Window Frame:

You may notice that this window is fixed into place (half open) and cannot be ‘rolled’ up or down:

Fit this window assembly to the inside of the Left Door and Handle, aligning the three holes and posts as shown…

… and secure with three (3) Type C screws.

Do not over-tighten these as you don’t want to crack the plastic Window Frame:

Left Door Panel

Retrieve the Left Door Panel assembly from Pack 39. Line up the five posts on the back of the Left Door Panel to the matching pins of the Left Door and Handle and carefully press them together.

The instructions say some force and patience are required here to get these parts to fit tightly, however, mine fit together quite easily:

This is how our completed left door should look:

Thoughts

The Left Door and Handle is quite heavy and that makes me happy. The exterior door handle is also pre-installed for us. This door was actually pretty easy to assemble compared to my other builds.

  1. A good tip when inserting screws into metal is after every couple of turns back the screw off a quarter turn just to break the thread and paint that has built up.

  2. Did you have a problem with slop in the door hinge? When assembled for me and I close the door, the retainer gets pushed up making the hinge quite sloppy. With the door open, the slop goes away.

    1. I don’t notice that on my model, and I am not sure what would cause that. If you remove the door and move the hinge through its range of motion, do you see where it loosens?
